Century Mechanical Pencil, ca. mid-1920s, made in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Century made high end pens for a rather short time period and they have become just one the many small Midwest pen companies that gather attention from pen collectors. Century had a close relationship with Parker and some of the Century pens and pencils also look similar to Parkers. This large over sized pencil is in deep blue and pearl celluloid, gold filled large crown, tabbed clip is engraved Century. Short, rather typical looking ferrule, however other celluloid Century pencils I've been able to reference have all had rather long and large ferrules. Barrel is engraved: Century Pen Co Whitewater, Wis. Twist crown to extend and retract 1.1mm diameter lead. Measures 5.25 inches long, diameter is just shy of a half inch. No brassing to any trim. The pencil is made of an interesting piece of celluloid. As mentioned it is blue and pearl, and on close inspection it also has very small flecks of of red. Excellent condition and yes, it is rare! |

Autopoint Double Ender Mechanical Pencil, Black faceted bakelite barrel, one black end and one red end, bright chrome clip and ferrules. Measures 6 inches long. Twist each end to extend 1.1mm diameter lead, manual repel. Barrel is clearly marked Skilcraft – US Government in white. Slide on accommodation clip is engraved USA Skilcraft so is probably original to the pencil. A bit befuddling since this pen is obviously an Autopoint with correct mech inside and yet is marked Skilcraft which is made by Industries for the Blind which supplies multitudes of US Govt. pens and has for many decades. A bit of an oddity. I don’t recall seeing this version before, but if it was made by Skilcraft, you just know there were many more! Very good condition. |

MI1354 | Levison & Blythe Marking Crayon - In the days before Sharpies, there were marking crayons! This paper wrapped black crayon is marked on the wrapper: Levison's Lumber and shipping Crayon No 434. For Epress Work, Smooth Wood, Leather, Paper, Cloth, Etc. Waterproof. Will Not Rub Off. Levison & Blythe Mfg Co St Louis. Measures 4 7/8 in long, half inch at wide points, crayon is six sided which would have prevented it from rolling away. Marking crayons aren't particularly my specialty, but this is a nice example and I'd date it to the 1930s. Tiny bit of the black crayon bleed through at flat end onto wrapper, doesn't interfere with lettering. Probably was a little more pointed originally, I think someone marked a couple things with this one, still most of the original point is there. | $10 |

Wood pencils may very well be the most user friendly writing instrument in the world! Generally non-toxic, wood pencils are leak-proof, can delete your errors and are not subject to electronic snafus. Not to mention they are inexpensive and easy to acquire. A wood pencil can write on average a line abut 35 miles long - about 45,000 words. A sharpened pencil point can withstand writing pressure of about 3700 pounds of pressure per square inch before breaking off. Early references to graphite date back to around 1564 when plumbago was discovered by shepherds and used to mark their flocks. In 1779 K.W. Scheele in Sweden discovered that plumbago was a form of carbon and named it graphite. In 1662, Friedrich Staedtler opened a pencil shop in Nurnberg, Germany. Kaspar Faber first commercially produced pencils in 1765 in Stein, Germany by binding graphite with Bavarian clay. Faber Castell continues to make pencils and other writing instruments today. Other early pencil inventors were Corte of France and Hardtmuth of Austria who worked on perfecting the graphite composition. Today, many of the early formulas for graphite are still in use by pencil makers. |

Kings Dominion Souvenir Sliding Pencil Box - This is a souvenir pencil box with brass ruler across the front edge from Kings Dominion amusement park just north of Richmond, Virginia. I'd date it to real early in their history, they opened in 1975 and the attractions painted on the sliding lid were rather short lived: Wacky Races, Coney Island, Old Virginia Line and Blue Ridge Tollway - the Eiffel Tower still stands. The sliding lid opens by putting your pencil through the hole on the right end and moving the lid back and forth, it's early '70s-nifty! Measures 12 in long x 1 7/8 wide, plenty of room for pencils or other writing trinkets. Very good condition. |

PCL-075 | Eberhard Faber Microtomic Pencil Box with Pencil - Nicely made Eberhard Faber pencil box with hinged lid also has great graphic design on the lid. Microtomic Van Dyke Eberhard Faber in yellow on black on at two toned green striped background. Marked 600-4H on one end and indeed inside is one of the original pencils which has been hand sharpened, no eraser because this pencil did not originally have an eraser. Inner box lid notes that the Microtomic was made in 18 degrees and was smooth, uniform, strong and lasting. I think that must refer to the well made lead in these pencils since we all know that wood pencils do not last forever, you sharpen, resharpen and do it over and over until you get down to the nub that you can't bear to throw away, but also is too short to hold on to! Box and pencil in very good condition. | $10 |
